Demi + Johnny’s DIY Wedding
Demi and Johnny got married yesterday in their tiny local church, by a vicar who’s known Johnny his whole life. The whole day was gently chaotic - in a really good way. Let me explain, and show you their sneak peeks.
Demi got ready with her mum and bridesmaids, which mainly involved Disney singalongs, pastries and accidentally getting foundation on her wedding dress, then figuring out how to use boob tape to conceal any evidence (I think it worked). We also took the least candid candid wedding photo in the history of wedding photos.
The drive from my home in Chester to their Northamptonshire village can only be described as apocalyptic. Rain followed followed me all the way down, and kept going. At one point during the ceremony, it got so heavy that people even exchanged nervous glances, which, if you know anything about British rural families, means people were genuinely assessing whether the roof was about to cave in.
Demi and Johnny’s ceremony had several personal touches that I really loved - firstly, their two spaniels were there (and being kept quiet with a bucket of peanut butter), and their friend played the organ for them. In all the weddings I’ve photographed, I’ve never seen these two things happen at once, so that was brilliant.
The sun came out for a bit then, and we cracked on with the rest of the day. Confetti, group photos, a pit stop for couple photos in the woods, then on to the reception. A paddock space, strewn with bunting and lanterns, with a raffle, amazing disco, and some toffee vodka. More mayhem ensued (see the pics below - right to the end).
Demi and Johnny wanted to start their married life with a relaxed but fun wedding, and they absolutely made that happen by planning such a fun day! They booked a fantastic band who everyone danced to, had a help yourself attitude to drinks (hard and soft), let kids be kids, and kept everyone laughing and joking all day. In my opinion, this is how you plan a relaxed wedding - by planning to make it fun.
